Guns, cowboys, indians, and horses. That's what is normally imagened when the "Wild West" is mentioned. Who were some of the famous characters? What is the history behind some of the famous stories? Where was the "Wild West"? When was the "Wild West"?

While the characters and stories are an integral part of the Wild West, the images and artwork of the cowboy times illicit awe inspiring action. One of the most famous artists to depict this era was Frederic Remington. Born and raised in New York state, Remington hardly seems to someone that would be involved with America's memory of the 'Old West'. Bronco, by Remington In fact, Remington (no apparent relation to the gun makers), spent only a few short months at a time in the American West, yet his sculptures and paintings vividly depict the players in the the Wild West.[1]

Remington studied art at Yale, but was more interested in football and boxing, at which he was very adept. After returning home to aid in the family business after his father's death, Remington married, and became a businessman in Kansas City. Caught in a circle A witness to Teddy Roosevelt's ride up San Juan Hill and the disappearance of the Old West, Remington's artwork captures the moment and keeps the West alive.

"Art is a she-devil of a mistress, and if at times in earlier days she would not even stoop to my way of thinking, I have persevered and will so continue," said Remington of art in 1905.[2] His perseverence provides us with a glimpse at a bygone era. Living mainly on the East Coast of the United States, Remington made many short trips to the West where he was a first hand observer of the age of cowboy's and the wild frontier.
